Tuesday 12th June 2018

On Thursday 31st May, The Royal British Legion Challenge Cup was held at Stamford Bridge, home to Chelsea Football Club. 12 teams entered from M&S, Cadbury, Rolls Royce and Osborne competed against The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, The Royal British Legion and the Legion’s Battle Back Centre.

The funds raised from the tournament will go directly to the Legion’s Battle Back Centre, an Army-led Centre which supports wounded, injured and sick Service personnel. Led by world-class coaching staff the centre exists to help people achieve their best possible recovery and either return to Service duty or to make a smooth transition to civilian life.

Upon arrival all players were treated to a Legion Jutexpo goody bag containing their special poppy team kit and listened to speeches from members of staff at the Battle Back, outlining the vital support Service personnel receives at the centre.

After the competitive group stage Team Battle Back and Rolls Royce made, but fell in the semi final and finalists Osborne and M&S were walked out of the tunnel by Premier League referee Kevin Friend to the UEFA Champion’s League’s dramatic anthem. Construction company Osborne were crowned the 2018 champions, narrowly beating M&S in the final in a tight but eventful 1-0 victory.

Prizes on the night included awards for the best goal celebration, best team goal and best dressed manager while the winning team received a year’s worth of chocolate and their height in beer, generously donated by Cadbury and Greene King.

Alastiar McIntosh, playing for Cadbury FC, said: “My boyhood dream of being a Premier League footballer seemingly came true whilst playing in what was an extremely well organised tournament for a great cause. Thank you to The Royal British Legion for putting on such a great evening!”

Ben France, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Royal British Legion, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the teams that took part in the Legion’s 2018 Challenge Cup at Stamford Bridge. They played superbly well and It was great to see everyone involved having such a great time. The tournament raised over £40,000 that will help fund the Legion’s Battle Back Centre, which provides adaptive sports and adventure opportunities for wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans to help with their recovery.”

This was the second year the tournament has been held and following its success, the Legion is now planning to repeat the event again in 2019. If you would like your company to take part please register your interest at corporatepartnerships@britishlegion.org.uk
